Old Pine Furniture Collections

The Old Pine Furniture Collection offers custom reclaimed wood tables and furniture for the dining room, family room, living room and office. This workshop specializes in making one of a kind dining tables, coffee tables, console tables, end tables, desks and buffets. Each piece of furniture is individually bench made and finished to order. Furniture finishing includes professionally applied wax, stain or paint. Two clear top coats on stain and paint finishes provide a superior durable surface. This US based workshop has been making custom reclaimed wood tables and furniture for over 25 years.

Material

Material: Reclaimed Hemlock Pine
Hemlock is a member of the pine family of woods. It is a very strong softwood that is resistant to wear, resistant to warping and holds finishes well. In fact, this softwood actually grows harder with age! Hemlock even gives some hardwoods a run for their money as a yet strong, easy-to-work furniture stock.

Reclaimed Wood: Old Pine tables are crafted from old timber reclaimed from the roof joist or flooring of old buildings. Exposure of this wood to the elements over the years has produced beautiful and weathered surfaces. The old timber was selected for its graining and distinctive characteristics then de-nailed, planed, and cut. After being sanded and hand finished, the result is a finished piece which resembles a genuine antique. Each item is unique and handmade using “old world” workmanship which may cause slight differences in measurements. The minor splitting, cracking, and crazing that may occur creates the antique but spirited look that is part of the charm and appeal of these tables.

Check Cracks: Our wood tables are constructed from real trees and/or solid planks of reclaimed wood, not engineered wood, and professionally dried to 6 – 12% moisture content before any build. Solid wood adjusts to the moisture content in the air at different times of the year. In a sense, the wood breathes just like us. Therefore, the temperature and humidity of your home will affect how your table behaves. To avoid this problem, cabinets and other case goods are normally built with furniture grade panels consisting of internal alternating grain wood sheets sandwiched by outside sheets of finished wood. This type of construction does not work well for most table tops, so we use a glued wood plank construction. As a result. you may notice your table and/or breadboard move slightly or develop small check cracks or dips. You may also notice occasional lifting on the epoxy or resin fills we use in processing our reclaimed wood tables. THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. This is the inherent character of planked reclaimed wood construction and is not considered a defect in material, nor will affect the structural integrity of the table.

Finishes

Options: 4 standard waxes, 6 standard stains, 43 standard paints.

Waxes: Low VOC colored wax that is virtually odour free, easy to apply, and once buffed to the desired sheen level, provides a depth of finish that revives and protects any original patina. The application of additional coats will deepen the existing color and significantly enhance the resulting sheen level.

Stains: Water based, low VOC stain.

Paints: Minimum of 2 coats of cabinet grade paint. In addition to standard one color rubbed finish, 2 color and 3 color rubbed finishes are available.

Clear coat: All paint and stained finishes include 2 coats of a water based, low VOC polycarbonate
urethane.

Custom Colors: Custom colors are available using either Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint colors. Please provide manufacturer, paint color number and paint name. Custom colors require an up charge.

Measurements

Top Thickness: Standard Top = approx. .75-.875", Thick Top = approx. 1.5-1.75". Table tops vary in size because each piece of wood is different. The thickness of the table top is only for aesthetics and does not affect the table structure. Table heights will vary with the thickness of the table top – Standard Top: 30"H (approx. 29.75 – 29.875). Thick Top: 31"H (30.5” – 30.75”).

Leg Sizes: Standard legs: 3.5-4"W, Large legs: 4.5-5"W. Leg height is 29”H.

Aprons: Apron heights are 4”H. The bottom of the apron is 25” from the floor.

Corners & Edges: Square: square corners and ⅛” radius on edges. Rounded: 1” corner radius on standard top and 1.5” corner radius on thick top, ¼” radius on edges for both thicknesses.

End Extensions: 18”W Standard. Optional widths: 19” to 24”W. End extensions will have breadboard ends if breadboard ends are specified for the table top. End extension guides are slightly tapered to provide firm fit when inserted in square apron cut outs at the end of the table. When stored back to back two end extensions are about the size of a card table.

Breadboard

Optional. Standard sizes: 2"Breadboard for Standard Top, 4"Breadboard for Thick Top. A breadboard refers to the contrasting piece of wood at the end of the table. In the past, it was used to ensure that the plank top table didn't warp, but today is purely decorative. Please note: The breadboard end does move with changes of temperature and humidity, and the ends may extend beyond the table edge during the colder, drier months of the year.

Finishing: Wax vs. Stain

Old Pine Tables are available in a either a waxed or stained finish. There are pluses and minuses to both finishes. Since it is a wood table, both finishes require the use of place mats, coasters, and hot pads to keep from creating water or heat marks on the surface of the table. A waxed finish provides a rich, low luster, softer surface. The advantage of wax is you can re-wax the surface to restore the finish and cover minor wear marks. Since the wood is already distressed, the wax also tends to blend in any more significant scratches or damage. If something major happens the wax can be removed, the surface sanded, and then re-waxed. A stained surface is a tougher, more durable surface. Water marks take a lot longer to form and, since we use a water based varnish, in most cases, water marks will disappear when they dry. The disadvantage to this finish is, if the surface is scratched, it will require professional repair to fix it. Of course, since the wood is distressed to begin with, minor marks just increase the character of the table top and do not stand out.

Waxed Table Care

The waxed top of your table is relatively easy to maintain. Spills of cold liquids (juice, sodas, etc.) can be easily wiped with a damp cloth. This is all you should have to use for the daily maintenance of your yable. HOT/WARM ITEMS will leave rings, etc., and the table must be protected the same way that you would protect any fine furniture. If you get a hot ring/mark on your table that is still very noticeable after re-waxing the entire top, you may have refer to a more detailed repair. See product care instructions (under colors tab) for more details.
