Design Tip: Beadboard Paneling #beadboard #cottagefurniture #cottagebedrooms #cottagestyle #farmhousestyle http://cottagehomefurniture.com Image: BHG

Beadboard paneling is an old fashioned wall treatment that is often used in cottage decorating as it creates a charming cottage style decor.  It used to be installed board by board, but over time humidity and moisture buckled the boards, and caused the paint finish to crackle.  Now furniture makers and contractors recommend investing in products that are made with medium density fiberboard, MDF, for a sturdy and long-lasting decorative finish.

This beautiful cottage style bedroom is a perfect example of how beadboard can really make a statement.  The stunning blue paint on the walls really emphasizes the horizontal beadboard wall covering, and brings a whole new level of charisma to the space.  You will also notice that the beadboard is used on the ceiling as well.  A small, but important, design detail in using multiple beadboard surfaces is to switch up the sizing of the panels as well as the direction that they run.  The ceiling slats are smaller and positioned vertically, and the wall slats are slightly larger and positioned horizontally. This helps to break up any monotony or over-stimulation you might feel if the beadboard was the same everywhere.

The beauty of using beadboard as a decorative accent is that it comes in so many styles, cuts, and finishes.  You can easily create a custom look that is sure to reflect your own style!

It's time to shed the wool blankets, kick off the slippers, and get decorating for spring. A very easy and effective way to transition your living room from Winter neutrals to Summer color is to swap out the accessories. It's as easy as replacing, or adding, colorful throw pillows to your sofa or swapping out your lamps for a pop of color. Also, think about choosing a less expensive throw rug to swap out periodically versus investing in a more expensive area rug. Or even layer your rugs to create a dynamic look. Here is an example of a winter to summer look in no time:

The brown and slate color combination in the before picture creates a soothing and cozy retreat.  A perfect place to curl up with a good book through the long winter months.  It is a refined decorating style with mercury and black accents that contrast against the neutral taupe tones.

By switching out the accents in the room, the overall mood of the space changes dramatically. Changing minor things, like adding new throw pillows, incorporating bright accents, and using a colorful rug, brings the whole room to life. This living room now has the personality to match the energy and vibrancy of the coming summer months.

Natural Fibers - Sisal

Natural Fiber Rugs | The Distinctive Cottage Image: Milk and Honey

Real 100% sisal rugs are beautiful, but they do have some maintenance requirements you should know before purchasing.
  • All spills will stain the rug, but there are ways to minimize the visibility of the stain.  Because water can even stain sisal, use the least amount of liquid when spot cleaning.  You want to use ammonia, vinegar, or detergent, depending on the stain, in a spray bottle diluted with warm water.  Then you can lightly mist the solvent on the stain, blot and repeat until stain has lessened.
  • Sisal has a course fiber consistency, so it's not the most comfortable selection for living rooms or bedrooms where you will be shoe-less.  But if you are okay with the coarse texture, than these are the most durable option for high traffic areas.

Natural Fibers - Wool

Wool rugs are available in a multitude of neutral shades and fiber consistencies.  Wool pile, or wool looped rugs, are a great solution for creating a natural look.

Natural Fiber Rugs | The Distinctive Cottage Image: Remodelista

  • Wool pile will shed during the life of the rug, so regular vacuuming is necessary.
  • They are typically plush and very comfortable for the living room, bedroom, or family area.
  • You want to blot spills immediately, but if the stain does set, than you can use a mild detergent for cleaning.

Natural Fibers - Jute

Jute looks a lot like sisal, but jute rugs are different in texture, yarn color variations, and cost.

Natural Fiber Rugs | The Distinctive Cottage Image: Pinterest

  • Jute tends to be softer on the feet in comparison to sisal, because the fibers have a slight waxy coating to them.
  • You want to follow the same cleaning instructions as sisal.
  • Jute does tend to shed so regular shaking or vacuuming is recommended.
  • There are color variations naturally in jute fibers, so every jute rug is unique. They tend to be a less expensive alternative to sisal rugs.

Natural Fiber Look-a-Likes: Polypropylene

Natural Fiber Rugs | The Distinctive Cottage Image: New England Home

Synthetic fiber neutral rugs have a similar look to sisal and jute, but a very different feel.  They tend to be thinner in pile, but the durability and practicality are priceless.
  • These often come available with a fabric border to jazz up the look.
  • Made of 100% polypropylene material, you can literally hose them off outside and let them dry in the sun when there are spills.
  • The low pile makes it easy for cleaning and vacuuming.
Whatever material you choose, make sure you check with the manufacturer for specific cleaning instructions that you can follow to stay within a rug's warranty.   Brought to you by Cottage Home - specializing in cottage furniture & farmhouse tables   [post_title] => Design Tip: Natural Fiber Rugs [post_excerpt] => Do you love the look of natural fiber rugs, but are unsure of which kind would work for your home? #1: Same Chair Different Colors

When deciding how many colors to use around your table, keep in mind how many chairs you are using.  For example, if you have a small set of four chairs for everyday dining, than four different colors is great, because there is only a small number of chairs.  If you have seating for 6 or 8 on an everyday basis, than stick to 3 or 4 colors.  You can do two chairs in each color - that way the overall feeling won't be too hectic.  If you do decide to do 6 to 8 different colors, then choose colors that are the same hue to keep a cohesive look.  Another great way to unify a collection of mismatched chairs is to upholster the seats in the same fabric!

#2: Different Chairs Same Color

If you are looking for an eclectic look without introducing too many additional colors, try bringing together an assortment of chairs and having them painted the same color.  Since you are using a single color in a large dose it really makes a statement, especially when using a lively color like the one shown here.  The beauty is that you are not looking for a perfect set, so choose chairs that are comfortable to you.  As you can see in the example photo, each chair is unique, they vary in sizes and shapes, and the overall look is still cohesive because of the color!  Also, the cute black and white fabric on just a few of the chairs adds texture while breaking up the color a little bit.

#3: Different Chairs Different Colors

Colorful Dining Room Chairs | Different Chairs, Different Colors Photo: Design Is Mine This option is for people who want a really whimsical and creative dining room look.  The complementing painted chairs are vivid and appealing without being to overwhelming to the eye.  By mixing in additional steel chairs, it breaks up the textures and finishes while adding a rustic element. Keeping the walls stark white allows the colors to really shine.

#4: Same Side Chairs Different Head Chairs

Another option to bring color and life into your dining room is to use upholstered chairs!  Parson's chairs are beautiful, comfortable, and come in a variety of styles.  Typically parson's chairs are larger than the average dining chair, so depending on the size of your dining room table, they may only be able to fit at the ends of the table.  Afraid of introducing fabric because of wash-ability?  No fear, there are wonderful options for slipcovered parson's chairs with covers that can be removed for easy cleaning.  Click here to see more slipcovered parson's chairs. The inspiration photo shown uses two oversized wing back chairs in an eye catching print, making them the main focal point.  The leather side chairs are a perfect complement to the intensity of the teal print, and also don't interrupt the view out the windows. Whatever the route you decide to go, don't be afraid to experiment with color combinations.  Choose colors that inspire you, make you feel happy, and reflect your personality! As we hunker down for a long winter here in New England, we are reminded to prepare our beds for cozy sleeping.  Here are a few cottage bedroom decorating ideas and inspiration photos for an inviting, warm, and easy to care for seasonal bed!

1) Choose a comfortable type of sheet set, because that is what your body will be predominately exposed to.  There are several kinds to choose from, but we prefer 100% cotton because there are no harsh chemicals found in cotton.  It is a hypoallergenic material, soft to the touch, and an environmentally friendly natural fiber.  It is also an easy to care for material, durable, and not prone to pesky static!

2) Choose a down comforter that is going to work well with the type of "sleeper" you are.  This refers to the temperature you keep your bedroom at, as well as how your body naturally regulates temperature throughout the night.  For people who are cold sleepers, meaning you tend to be chilly and require a lot of heat to maintain comfort, than it is suggested to choose a heavy weighted down filled comforter.  On the other hand, people who tend to be warm sleepers, meaning you tend to heat up or over-heat easily, than it is suggested to use a lighter weight down comforter.  Retailers all rate their products individually, and it is best to consult a sales professional when determining which of those retailers’ comforter level is best for you. If you have any allergies to down fill, there are several synthetic comforters to choose from as a hypoallergenic alternative.  Some premium comforter retailers offer a synthetic down fill, which feels, warms, and clusters just like real down feathers.

3) Choose a blanket to top your comforter that is going to be weighty enough to hold in the heat.  It is imperative to have this layer of blanket to trap in the heat below and keep you nice and toasty.  If you are a warm sleeper, and don't need as much added warmth, than choose a blanket that has a more crocheted or basket weave where air can circulate through. This layer is also where you can have fun with color and texture to make your bed's personality shine.  Do you want a cool and classic color combination, or do you want a vibrant and bold graphic look?  Cottage Bedroom Decorating Ideas | Design Tip: layering Your Linens III                   Cottage Bedroom Decorating Ideas | Design Tip: layering Your Linens IV photo: Heirloom General                                                                           photo: Pinterest 4) Building off of your top blanket layer, you want to choose shams and decorative pillows that will play off of your color scheme.  There is no need to overdo the decorative pillows, and there is a reason they are called throw pillows!  Choose a practical number of extra pillows that you don't mind tossing on and off the bed daily.

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo: Apartment Therapy

Sometimes a room is in need of more than just a coat of paint to bring it’s personality to life.  Wallpaper provides a decorative back splash that sets the tone for a space using color, design, and texture.  Introducing the right wallpaper to your room isn't always an easy feat, so here are a few helpful tips to guide you in the right direction!

» Decide How Much Should be Covered -

  • "Entire Room" To maximize the intensity of a selected pattern use it on all the walls in a room.  Depending on the print it can actually make the room feel larger by unifying the space with one print.

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo: Indulgy This large bloom print creates visual interest and keeps the dining room calm with a neutral unifying palette.

  • "Focal Point"  If you want the selected print to act as an accent, use it to draw attention to an interesting architectural detail.  For example, apply it above wainscoting, on the fireplace wall, or on bump out walls.

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo: House to Home Bold avocado wainscoting is balanced beautifully with the vivid toile print in this bathroom. Perfectly suited crisp white fixtures complete the look.

  • "Top to Bottom" This application is suggested with highly textured wallpapers in more of a neutral color.  You want the wallpaper selection to enhance, not overtake, your space.

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo: House Beautiful The large floral wallpaper in rosy hues is a darling choice for this tucked away bedroom.  Using a soft color palette and applying the wallpaper on both the walls and eaves creates a unified space.

» Choosing the Right Color and Design for Your Space -

  • The function of the room suggests the tone of the wallpaper, so keep it subtle in quiet areas like the bedrooms, but try to take a chance in gathering spaces like the living room and dining room.  Just like paint colors, your wallpaper selection will help to create the mood of the room.  Using lively prints in active areas of your home can also help to increase energy!

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo: Southern Living This is a perfect example of going bold in color and giving the walls texture with a grass cloth weave.

  • Look at the existing furniture and textiles in the room that you want to work around.  Choose a color that will complement the color scheme versus duplicating an already predominant color.  You want the wallpaper to set the stage for your furniture and produce a balance within the space.  That could mean the wallpaper acts more like a focal point when paired with neutral furnishings, or act as a neutral backsplash with more lively furnishings.

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo: Apartment Therapy Framing the cheery yellow wallpaper produces a vibrant accent, as well as making a great backdrop for the white tight back sofa.

  • Consider how much light the space gets in order to choose the right hue.   Avoid darker colors in smaller rooms; use them in larger spaces with a lot of windows instead.

Wallpaper Tips | Design Tip: Making a Splash with Wallpaper photo:  HGTV This sprawling map wallpaper wraps around the room and works beautifully with the sunny windows and simple decor.

» Function As Well As Fashion -

  • For bathrooms and kitchens, seek wallpapers that are water resistant as these spaces tend to trap moisture; you don’t want the wallpaper to peel.
  • For entryways, vinyl wallpaper is a great choice because they tend to be durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean.
  • Fabric, Flock and Grass Cloth type wallpapers tend to be difficult to clean so use these in spaces that do not produce a lot of moisture or high traffic.

Even though Thanksgiving is behind us, the holiday season of warm foods and gathering with family and friends for long meals continues throughout the winter.  You want to ensure your guests are comfortable and feel invited to stay awhile for a cozy evening in.  These five seasonal dining tips will not only help to make your dining room look good, but feel good too!

5 Seasonal Dining Tips photo: The Kitchn

» Address Seating: Comfortable seating is one of the most important elements in achieving a successful dining experience.   Upholstered chairs are the most inviting, but they do take up a lot of space and are not always practical for a messy bunch!  If you have wood chairs, try bringing in a seat cushion or small lumbar pillows to add comfort, as well as some color.

» Linens: Dress up your table with linens to add a personal touch for your guests.  Remember to layer for a visually interesting display by alternating between patterns and solids.  For example, a patterned runner that runs the length of the table, topped with complimenting solid placements and accenting patterned napkins, is a practical and pretty equation.   The patterns of the runner and napkins will hide the inevitable dinner mess, while the solid placements carve out individual dining spaces.  This is where you can have fun with color, pattern, and texture to make it your own!

» Decorative Focal Points: Creating a successful table-scape is a mix of function and flair.  The accent pieces you choose for your table should either be tall and slender, or wide and low, to ensure you are not interrupting the primary reason for gathering:  conversation.  This time of year is perfect for accenting your table with natural items like pinecones, tree branches, or greenery.  When using hurricanes, make sure the vessel is appropriate for the items' natural size and scale.

» Lighting: The level of lighting directly affects the ambiance of your dining experience.  You want to ensure your guests can see who is sitting across from them at the table without causing a fluorescent lighting effect.  Having a low slung chandelier is the perfect solution for an aesthetically pleasing and efficient lighting source.  The bulbs are usually 35-60 watts, creating a warm glowing environment.  Candles are also a nice touch to set the tone for a cozy night around the dinner table.

5 Seasonal Dining Tips | Lighting photo: Sophisticated Edge

» Dining Room Rugs: An essential design element in any dining room is the rug, which anchors the table and chairs, while adding color and comfort.  Choosing the right type of rug is not always easy, but low-pile, tight weave rugs are best.  This allows for easy maintenance, like spot cleaning and vacuuming, while also making it easy for chairs to move.  The size of the rug is also important. You want to allow enough space for the chairs to stay on the rug, even when pulled away from the table.  Choose a rug that will be cozy on the feet, and sized correctly for your guests’ ease of use.

  • The First Impression: An important starting point in re-organizing your entry way is to identify what kind of first impression you want to create for your home.  Choose a color palette that will enhance the desired feeling and that will blend into the rest of the home effortlessly. Organize Your Entryway | First Impression Entryway photo: Mochatini Blog
  • Practical Pieces: Brainstorm what you want functionally from your mudroom, how much storage you need, and what things in particular you will need to store on a daily basis.  Then choose pieces that will support those functions for easier everyday living.  By planning ahead and finding the right pieces for you makes all the difference in creating an efficient space that will be easier to remain in working order.  You can also combine open storage and closed storage for a more interesting array of pieces.  A good example of a sensibly chic piece would be a slipcovered bench, which adds an inviting touch, while also offering a useful place for sliding shoes on.  And don’t forget all of the small things that need a home too!  Set up a spot for keys, wallets, phones and all other important necessities. Organize Your Entryway | Practical Entrywayphoto: House Plans & More
  • Operational Accents: Use baskets to create a casual and versatile storage solution that can be tucked in anywhere.  Underneath an open based console table or buffet is a perfect place for added storage.  Also, choose a rug that will hold up against the constant foot traffic that traipses through the door.  There are great indoor/outdoor rugs made of 100% polypropylene that won’t break the bank.  These rugs are easy to clean as they are hoseable, scrubbable and bleachable. Area Rug Sizing | Cottage Home Design Guide 103

Area rugs usually come in a range of standard sizes.  The ratio of the length to the width for standard sizes is similar to the "Golden Ratio" of 1.6, which is a popular, visually-pleasing design parameter.  Size availability will vary by manufacturer and specific rug design.  Custom area rugs tend to cost twice as much as a similarly sized standard area rug. Due to the variability of room size and shape, furniture arrangements, and limited standard area rug sizes, the best way to select a specific rug for a room is to use an interactive computer layout.  As a general guideline for area rug sizing, a rug should be sized to either have all of the furniture off the rug, all of the furniture on the rug, or to anchor the front legs of all the furniture on the rug.  For living rooms and family rooms, the best option tens to be having the front legs of the furniture on the rug to anchor the furniture to a cozy seating area.
