A farmhouse kitchen is the ultimate area to relax and eat meals in the home. It’s an open-concept space in which families can get together and celebrate. But what elements are found in farmhouse kitchens? And how can you create the ideal farmhouse kitchen in your home? In this latest post, we’re highlighting five examples of features you’ll find in the classic farmhouse kitchen.

What to Consider When Shopping for Farmhouse Kitchen Products

Before reviewing the latest items matching the farmhouse kitchen aesthetic, you must keep some considerations in mind. Below are several key questions to help you when making the decision.

Does the Product Match the Colors of My Kitchen?

When adding new products to your kitchen, take the time to review the exact colors of each item, and ensure the colors match the distinct style of your kitchen. You can speak with the sales team directly to learn more about the color-matching process. This can be important to unifying the current look of the kitchen and achieving your design goals.

Can the Item Be Easily Integrated?

When most people are shopping for new feature items in their kitchen, they aren’t considering the process of integrating the new item. A new sink might be the ideal choice for improving the kitchen’s design. But how much work is involved in getting the sink into the kitchen and installing it?

Will the New Feature Offer Lasting Value?

While farmhouse kitchen styles tend to remain similar over many years, you may find that some new additions are simply a recent trend. Take the time to speak with the experts and find out about the lasting value a new addition can bring to life in your farmhouse.

Here are five distinct farmhouse kitchen design elements you might want to add to your home.

1. Exposed Shelving and Cabinetry

The typical farmhouse kitchen will feature exposed shelving cabinetry, which makes the room feel more open and welcoming. Make sure that exposed shelving is near to natural light sources so that you can expand upon the feeling of openness. Exposed shelving and cabinetry take up less visual space, so they make the room seem larger and the ceilings appear higher and the walls further apart.

2. The Farmhouse Sink

The farmhouse sink harkens back to a time when the kitchen was the hub of all activity within the home. They offer the perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality. The traditional farmhouse sink is noted for its depth and width, as well as its apron, which juts out slightly from the countertop. In the farmhouse kitchen layout, the sink typically contrasts in color from the rest of the countertop.

3. Free-Standing Cabinets

As well as being exposed to the light, farmhouse kitchen cabinets are typically freestanding. That's because space was limited back when the farmhouses were traditionally built, and so homeowners added freestanding features for additional storage. A freestanding cabinet is usually placed against a wall and out of the way to enhance traffic flow in the kitchen.

4. Hardwood Flooring

One of the standout features in many farmhouse kitchens is hardwood flooring. It will look impeccable whether you go for a distressed style or a more natural look. One of the key benefits of using hardwood flooring is that it’s easy to clean. And even wear and tear on the floor will add to the vintage appeal of the space. Many homeowners are now substituting natural wood with ceramic or vinyl for the same aesthetic without the associated maintenance or cost.

5. Traditional Lighting

Traditional farmhouse lighting can become the centerpiece of the room. Simple lighting additions such as Edison bulbs can help that classic style resonate. These features often look better when hanging down into the room. Using a drop-down fixture above your farm table will provide the perfect lighting conditions to prep and eat meals.

Yay or Nay?" We had a staggering amount of responses, and found that the results were neck-in-neck. 46% of the responders said no way would they ever have a TV in the bedroom, whereas 54% said they absolutely love having a TV in the bedroom! Even though there is no right or wrong answer, we wanted to share some of the pros and cons people posted from both sides of this heated debate.

Pros

  • In the colder months, there is nothing better than curling up in your nice warm bed to catch up on some of your favorite shows.
  • It is more comfortable to lie down and/or stretch out in bed versus on the sofa.
  • Another viewing area is helpful to avoid disagreements at home.
  • It is nice to have background noise when you fall asleep.
  • A great way to wake up in the morning is with coffee, in bed, while watching the morning news.

Cons

  • The noise and/or light level interrupts deep and restful sleep.
  • The bedroom is supposed to be a peaceful place, and the TV disrupts that.
  • There are TV's in the rest of the home, so it doesn't need to be in the bedroom too.
  • It is aesthetically displeasing.
If you find yourself in a disagreement with your partner about whether or not you should have a TV in the bedroom, here are a few ways to compromise.

Compromising

  • Have a TV in the bedroom, but put it in a cabinet that has closed doors. That offers an "out of sight and out of mind" mentality when not in use.
  • Use the sleep timer to make sure that the television shuts off, even after you have fallen asleep. That way it does not continue to interrupt deep and restful sleep for you or your partner.
  • Bring the laptop into bed instead of having a TV set up all of the time. It allows the TV viewer to put on headphones to listen in, while the other partner is none the wiser.
From an cottage decorating point of view, there are a lot of unobtrusive ways to incorporate a TV into your design scheme that don't make it a focal point.  Here are some beautiful inspiration photos to help you find the right solution for your bedroom:

How do you weigh in about having a TV in the bedroom?  Any new thoughts that might sway a yay or a nay-sayer to the other side?

Here is a quick reference photo that labels the sections of a sofa to help visualize where fabrics can be positioned.  The same terms can be used to describe accent chairs as well.

How To Make Collage Furniture | Collaging A Cottage Sofa

Determining the size of the piece you want to collage, and how many fabrics to use, are the two hardest questions to answer.  Keep in mind that the bigger the piece and the more fabrics you use, the more intense the overall look.  If you want a sofa with an eclectic look, but want to control the intensity, choose a limited number of fabrics that are softer on the eyes.

If you want an eclectic look with a lot of personality, go big and go bold!  Use a variety of fabrics in bold tones to design a look that shows off your creative nature.  The warm tones of the reds, greens, oranges and blues in the sofa below create an electrifying result.  It's not for the faint of heart, as it truly makes a brave statement.

How To Make Collage Furniture | Collaging A Cottage Sofa Images: Anthropologie

Using the collage application on an accent chair tends to be a more popular choice, because the scale allows for just a hint of eclecticism without dominating the space like a full size sofa would.  The personality of the piece is dictated by the shape of the chair and the fabric selections you use.  Since there is not as much surface space on a chair versus a sofa, the number of fabrics used is typically smaller, or the size of the fabric cuts are smaller.  Either way, you still end up with a unique and interesting addition to your home.  Here are a few decorating ideas of accent chairs that have a small number of complementing fabrics with a lot of pizzazz.

The beauty of incorporating a collaged piece in your home is the opportunity to think outside of the box.  You can use more of the fabrics that you love; you don't have to choose between that adorable blue ticking fabric, or the bountiful floral fabric you just can't resist.  Use them all to create a piece of furniture that will showcase your style and personality!

When a client comes in, we discuss practicality first and aesthetics second.  What is the point of a space that is beautiful, but not comfortable or useful?  Our aim is to help create a space that supports the function of the family, while also reflecting personal style and taste! This month's Design Dilemma comes from a young family near NYC who own a beautiful three-story brownstone.  They have a lower patio area in the back with a built-in grill & bar, and would like to create a spot for play dates, lounging, and casual entertaining. They also have a second floor deck, right off the kitchen, that is smaller (17' L x 7'W) that they want to use as a quieter seating area for morning coffee and quick bites.

Client's Wish List:

  • Comfort and durability
  • Fabrics and materials that are easy to clean
  • Place for kids toys
  • Eating spot
  • Lounging spot
  • Color and texture
  • Entertaining area that can accommodate up to 10 people at a time
  • Keep as many plants as possible

Key design challenges for the upper level:

  • Small space
  • Large planters take up floor space
  • Exposed to full sun/lack of shade
  • Lack of privacy with neighbors
  • Stairs can be hazardous with a small child

Key design challenges for the lower level:

  • Lack of night time lighting, especially on staircase
  • Seating arrangement cannot block the lower doors
  • Focus on casual seating versus formal dining set

Here is what we came up with:

Upper Level

The main priority for the upper level was to remove the large floor planters and replace them with planters that hang along all three railings.  Doing so frees up much needed floor space, while maintaining the natural privacy screen that keeps out prying eyes.

Next, we concentrated on the furniture type.  A small space requires smaller-scaled furniture - we found that some teak pieces fit the bill.  Our teak furniture comes in stylish frames with simple lines and comfortable outdoor cushions.  Comfort doesn't need to be sacrificed for space! A standard coffee table in front of the loveseats, because this is a high traffic area, wasn't going to work here.  We opted instead for two small end tables that can be tucked along the railing and pulled out whenever needed.

Another high priority was to create some shade for those sweltering days of summer!  We found a great swing arm umbrella that provides plenty of sun protection and stays out of the way when not in use.

Lower Level

Moving to the lower level, you may notice that we didn't fill all the space with furniture.  The family wanted enough seating for lounging and entertaining, but the priority was to provide an outdoor space for kids to play.  So, we left the center area as the play space while creating comfortable seating around the perimeter for the adults.  This works well in two ways: kids have room to run around, and adults have their own area to socialize.  Ample seating is provided by the sectional and accent chairs, as well as the teak bar stools around the grill and outdoor kitchen.

We chose total outdoor furniture for the sectional and accent chairs because this area is completely exposed to the elements, with little shade.  Total outdoor furniture is made of all-weather high density resin wicker wrapped over an aluminum frame with cushions are self-draining, mildew-resistant, and anti-microbial commercial grade foam. Therefore, a great low maintenance choice.

The colors and fabrics we chose for the lower level create a more vibrant and upbeat palette, in comparison to the cool tones we chose for the upper level.  Both spaces complement one another, but have their own "feel".  This doesn't mean the spaces aren't interchangeable, but they do have their own distinct ambiance.

To help illuminate the spaces at night, we love the idea of backyard lanterns.  String lights are also an easy and effective way to brighten the backyard and create a soft, beautiful glow.  Hang them from fence to fence, along the railings down the stairs, and even in the trees to create the feeling of a starry night.

Mission accomplished!  The family now has multiple places to eat, drink, nap and play all in the comfort of their own backyard!

How to Hang a Gallery Wall

How to Hang a Gallery WallImage: Holly Mathis Interiors

Filling a blank wall can be a daunting task, but what better way to fill a blank space than with the things you love? By collaging items together into a cohesive statement, you create visual interest while also expressing a little bit about who you are. A great starting point is deciding what kind of look you want to achieve.  Is it a symmetrical, traditional and classic look, or an asymmetrical, funky and abstract look?  Determining what style fits in with the space allows you to then begin to decide what you want to include in the collage and how it will be arranged.  Here are a few helpful hints to get you started.

Good Rule of Thumb: Same Sized Images and Same Frame Style

Creating a symmetrical configuration is a crisp and clean way to collage artwork.  This homeowner chose the same frame color and similar types of photos for a themed focal point. The large collage in this upscale dining room is a perfect choice to keep in harmony with the room's decor.  The snow white frames mimic the crisp white trim and window treatments, while the soft beige background ties in with the sisal rug.  The floral images contribute to the botanical theme of the room, while offering a soft and feminine feature.  The configuration of five columns in four rows is well-balanced and fills the blank wall perfectly without feeling overcrowded.

How to Hang a Gallery Wall | Different Sized Frames, Same Color Image: Two and Twenty Weekends

Good Rule of Thumb: Different Sized Images and Same Frame Style

Here is a perfect example of cohesive asymmetry for a gallery wall.  The creator used similar white frames to outline the miscellaneous collection of inspiring artwork and personal photos.  Maintaining a unifying element throughout the collage, in this case the white frames, brings  the whole look together. Notice how the outlets and the temperature gauges hide seamlessly among the artwork!

Good Rule of Thumb: Same Sized Images and Different Frame Colors

This cute nook of photos is another version of a symmetrical collage, which has the same sized frame, but in different colors to add diversity.  The border is even and the edges of each frame concise, while the varying colors create an eye catching pop.

How to Hang a Gallery Wall | Same Frame Different ColorsImage: Pinterest
How to Hang a Gallery Wall | Clustered Asymmetrical Gallery CollageImage: Pinterest

Good Rule of Thumb: Different Sized Images and Different Frame Styles

If you want a really eclectic collage you can mix a variety of images and objects together to achieve a clustered asymmetrical look.  This is a free flowing collage style, and the overall size is determined by the objects you choose.  What's nice about this style is that you can add and change it with ease since there is no set arrangement.   This clustered collage has a great variety of whimsical pieces, including painted canvases, rustic frames, and graphic block letters.  The soft and quiet colors look great against the pewter walls!

The most important rule of thumb when creating your own gallery collage is to have fun!  This is a design project that allows you to dictate what you want to see featured on your walls.  Choose items that share memories, inspire you, motivate you, and ultimately make you happy.  It's an opportunity to express the people, places, and things you love.

Pet Friendly Decorating Tips | Entryway with Wood Floors The entryway into your home can take a lot of abuse, not only from people, but pets as well.  It is the first area in the house where animals come in from the outside and shake off from rain, snow, mud, and dirt.  First, eliminate any materials where odors will be captured.  Carpeting will soak up odors, dander, hair will stick, and any "accidents" will be soaked into the carpet as well as the padding.  Wood, tile, cement, or other sealed flooring are the best choices for easy upkeep, including vacuuming, mopping, and sweeping.  Tile or cement are both nice choices for warmer climates, because either material creates a cool spot for your pet to lay low and escape the heat.   Pet Friendly Decorating Tips | Entryway with Tile With wood flooring, you have multiple options with different price tags, but most homes have pine, mahogany, red oak or maple floors.  Wood offers warmth and natural character, as the grains vary from board to board.  Wood is a penetrable material, so scratching from your pets’ long nails can occur.  It is best to keep their nails short to reduce damage to the floors.  Remember to have a designated mat where pets can wipe their paws.  Choose mats that are made of coarse synthetic fibers that will hold up to tough wear and will catch loose dirt.      The family room is where pets and people love to gather for relaxing, lounging, and spending time together.  Choosing fabrics and furnishings that support these activities creates a low key and happy place for everyone in the family. Pet Friendly Decorating Tips | Living Room with Easy Care Rug Laying the foundation is first and foremost:  the area rug!  Some key concerns when choosing the right area rug for your pets - Is it easy to clean?  Does it have a tight weave?  Will it stay in place with high traffic?  Choose a rug that has clear care instructions on what cleaning products are okay to use to spot-clean.  Try to avoid rugs that are dry clean only.  Synthetic fiber rugs are just as good as natural fiber rugs, and tend to be a little less expensive.  Depending on the blend type, they can even be a better choice for heavy traffic areas because of their durable and stain-resistant nature. The weave type of the rug is also significant if you have animals that tend to knead or dig a lot.  Their nails will create pulls and separations in the rug that will lead to constant rug replacements.  Choose rugs with a tight closed weave, and avoid options that have loose or knitted textures. Keeping the rug in place is an additional factor to consider, because a family room with pets is destined to become a play area!  Investing in a high-quality grip rug pad is recommended for any type of rug to help keep it in place. Pet Friendly Decorating Ideas | Living Room with Oyster Rug When choosing sofas & chairs for the family room, consider slipcovered frames versus upholstered frames.  A slipcover allows for much more flexibility for easy cleaning and is easier to replace when the time comes. Some people shy away from slipcovers because they want a more tailored look, but not all slipcovers have to be loose and ill fitting.  Look for a heavier weighted fabric that will keep its shape when draped.  A welt, or piping, around the frame also helps to give a slipcovered piece more structure. With either slipcovered or upholstered pieces, just like rugs, choose fabric material that is easy-to-clean and durable.  As we all know, no matter how much we try to keep our pets off the furniture, it's the first, and last, place they want to sleep!    Image Sources: Entryway Better Homes and Gardens Entryway Tear It Out Living Room The Inspired Room Living Room Cottage Home Brought to you by Cottage Home– specializing in cottage furniture & farmhouse tables [post_title] => A Home Fit For Our Furry Friends [post_excerpt] => Pets are a huge part of our families; they bring joy and happiness to our lives and to our homes. The Kitchen:

Color-blocked open shelving is clean, understated, and down-right gorgeous.  But how practical is it to display your everyday dishes?
Home Trends | Open Display Shelving in Kitchens  Image: Pinterest Home Trends | Open Display Shelving in Kitchens IIImage: House of Turquoise  Home Trends | Open Display Shelving in Kitchens III  Image: Centsational Girl
Pros:
  • Creates visual interest
  • Easy access to dishware
  • Open and airy design concept
Cons:
  • Not as easily managed as behind the door storage
  • Constant consideration for where things belong
  • Creates a higher level of maintenance for cleaning

The Living Room:

Animal hide rugs are a great choice for an elegant look, but how practical are they for a high traffic area such as the living room?
Home Trends | Living Room with Animal Hide RugImage: Fleaing Foxes Home Trends | Living Room with Animal Hide Rug IIImage: Iced Coffee&Peonies Home Trends | Living Room with Animal Hide Rug IIIImage: Pinterest
 Pros:
  • A stylish and luxurious look
  • Versatile, as they can be paired with any style
  • Creates a warm and cozy atmosphere
  • Adds an asymmetrical element with the skewed shape
Cons:
  • Typically there is no backing which makes for a trip/slip hazard
  • Mixed reviews on cleaning instructions. Some websites have a long list of care considerations, where others claim their product is low maintenance. Ensure the care instructions will be feasible to maintain prior to making a purchase.
Lucite has been around since the early 1930’s, and hit an all-time high in furniture design in the 1980’s.  It is a resin based material, which today, is available in many forms and colors.  Despite its popularity, does this material work for your coffee table for day-to-day life?

 Pros:
  • Limitless design for all types of spaces, and furniture arrangements, because of the “floating” visual affect
  • Introduces a new material into the space other than wood stained and painted tables
  • Blends into the space allowing for emphasis on other pieces in the room
Cons:
  • Lucite is an easy to scratch material, and because of the clear finish, those scratches become very apparent
  • Collects and shows dust quickly
  • They do not typically offer any storage

The Bathroom:

Open-concept shelving in the bathroom has a similar list of considerations as the kitchen.  However, in the bathroom, a whole different array of products are on display.  Does this look make an organized statement or create a high maintenance space?
Home Trends | Bathroom with Open Display ShelvingImage: Casa Decorada Home Trends | Bathroom with Open Display Shelving IIImage: Watermelon Fizz Home Trends | Bathroom with Open Display Shelving IIIImage: Houzz
Pros:
  • Offers visual interest with baskets, crates, jars and other interesting containers
  • Creates a spa-like atmosphere
  • Easy access to towels, washcloths, and linens
Cons:
  • Delicate balance between what should/should not be on display
  • Folding & organization quickly becomes an integral design necessity to maintain a spotless appearance
