No matter if you live in an urban loft or a New England cape in the suburbs, incorporating a farmhouse table into your floor plan instantly lends a feeling of comfortable hospitality and unending plenty. Our featured farmhouse dining room impresses with its inherent checks and balances; dark against light, formal against relaxed and grounded against airy. Dark and Light An unquestionably commanding framework is set with dark walnut stained dining chairs and a matching farmhouse trestle table. But what keeps this dining room from getting bogged down with all dark tones is the interplay with the room’s crisp, white elements - the glossy painted ceiling, trim work, wainscoting and chair rail, as well as the white candles, flowers and china. Touches of white as fresh as newly pressed country table linens give an instant lift to spirits. Formal and Relaxed One of the easiest and least expensive ways to express individuality in your dining room is through seating choices. Opting for rush seats on these otherwise elegantly turned dining chairs reveals a soft spot for rustic charm. Placing overstuffed, white upholstered host chairs at either end of the table brings a casual feel to the dining room that using all the same chairs would not achieve. The choice of white for the dining chair fabric again lightens things up and also conveys a carefree attitude toward entertaining. Grounded and Airy Naturally, the focal point of any dining room is the dining table and chairs, and the darkly handsome pieces in this farmhouse dining room are no exception. But they amiably share the show with all of the other more ethereal elements begging for your attention: the antique botanical prints of lacy leaves and berries, the strong yet delicate blown glass lighting fixtures and the bounty of flowers gracing the table settings. Washing over the whole scene is the light pouring through the large French doors, compelling you to pull up a chair in the moment. In short, this gracious farmhouse dining room cannot be accused of taking itself too seriously. Historically Speaking The trestle table is one of the oldest styles of dining table. With its narrow central structure, trestles were easy to transport, set up and take down. It is also said that trestle tables made sense as people would all sit on one side and be served by one person moving along the opposite side, Additionally, the trestle table, which could quickly and easily be flipped onto its side, was also used as a way to block the onslaught of any intruder who may choose to visit at mealtime in the uneasy days of Medieval Europe. In the market for a farmhouse table? We offer many styles of farmhouse table, but the foremost benefit of trestle tables is that they are great for tight seating requirements and provide more comfortable seating because the apron required for tables with legs is eliminated. All of our hand-made, hand-finished farmhouse trestle table offerings are made in the USA, fully customizable and come in an array of stains, paints and finishes. Here are a few:

Piedmont Trestle Table

Our Piedmont Country Farm Trestle Table with classic trestle base is one of our most popular farmhouse trestle tables. It is an authentic farm-style table custom built for you with either a planked or seamless top. Constructed with “slow-growth” Appalachian Pine, a renewable resource. Shown in Blackberry paint over Chestnut stain.

Barn Wood Trestle Table

Our Sheffield Barn Wood Trestle Table is a good example of a double pedestal farmhouse trestle table. A true work of art, it is hand-made of wood recycled from old barn boards. Part of our collection of Reclaimed Barn Wood Tables, all bench-built in standard old pine or old oak. Shown with Honey stain top with Tomato over Snow painted base.

Farmhouse Trestle Table

The contemporary Moosehead Lake Trestle Table with an inverted trestle and dramatic sweeping curves framing the pedestals is a contemporary version of a traditional farmhouse table. Crafted from dense kiln-dried solid American maple and poplar hardwoods. Table tops are made of solid wood boards joined together in a seamless surface; stained tops are made of maple and standard painted tops are poplar. Shown in Cinnamon stain. The overstuffed white host chairs bring in a casual feel to the more formal dining room chairs and table. The rich mahogany finish creates a stark contrast to the crisp white elements of the plush chairs, wainscoting, and framed ceiling. The large French doors allow the light to pour in creating an indoor/outdoor dining setting. The botanical prints and greenery accents also help to bring the outdoors in. Roses are Red & Cottage Homes can be too.

Adding touches of red to a cottage living room can be an inspired decorating move, but can also daunt those who think that the color necessarily invokes boldness. Soft reds are a compromise for those wanting to inject some warmth but who are also afraid of creating an overpowering palette. Valentine's Day is a perfect time to experiment with red with the possibility of it becoming a staple in your decor year-round.

Red accessories can ramp up your color scheme as much or as little as you desire without any permanent commitment. In the cottage room above, pillows and a lampshade in persimmon both draw out the natural color in the brick hearth and floor and add interest to the neutral taupe couch. Even the spines of old brick red volumes stand out nicely against the black backdrop of a floor-to-ceiling built-in and can be changed out to another color or object without much energy. Adding red is a great way to easily change up your decor and express your current mood.

Do you prefer bright lipstick red or soft berry reds?

To help soothe mid-winter moods, pick one room in your cottage home to host a neutral palette free of signature seasonal colors. Back up this fresh new look with a variety of transitional textures evoking both warm and cold weather months to help bridge the seasons. The cottage study above, with its granite fireplace framed by barnboards, white painted wood floors, and natural honey tones, is a perfect neutral nook. Small steps of slightly changing hues take you seamlessly from snow white to stone and sand through to warming golden brown. The deep color of the rattan chair frame plays off the reclaimed barn wood desk while the natural jute rug echoes the sandy granite blocks. Despite warming yourself by the hearth, you'll have no problem envisioning the tropical locale familiar to the star of the show - a large pink flamingo on a textile over the fireplace.

What space in your house can you transform into a mid-winter escape?

Ever want to embrace a trend -- or maybe even a few -- but you're afraid to oversaturate your space with that look? Anything but overdone, this cottage bedroom showcases a mix of rarely-linked decor sensibilities -- southwestern, industrial and nautical, interwoven with a hint of modern. Use of a unifying color scheme and a just a few key pieces from each style, along with some clever hybrid items, creates a unique and easy compatibility.

Sophisticated style choices coexist in this bedroom, yet it looks satisfyingly sparse and casual. Throw pillows with a simple chevron design bring to mind ship signal flags, but also fit with the area rug's primitive stepped design. Equally at home in a harbor town tavern or an restored warehouse, the wood and rope chandelier bridges the room's industrial and nautical elements. White and navy blue instantly conjures up a nautical vibe in this small coastal cottage bedroom, and with the colorway echoed in the Southwestern rug, the two styles are instantly reconciled. As a bonus, using a deep inky blue in a limited swath just behind the headboard creates a feeling of depth as the wall recedes under the sway of the dark color.

Creating meals is more than enjoyable when your kitchen is light, bright, and trimly stocked with everything you need within handy reach. An inspirational kitchen like the one pictured here, which is big on function but small on space, is all the more impressive as it is actually part of a tiny 200 square foot home. Through just a few simple style decisions - heavy reliance on white surfaces, use of extra windows and placement of open, accessible shelving rather than cabinetry - a seeming abundance of elbow room welcomes the eye. The mixed media walls, done in gleaming white subway tiles as well as both rustic, unfinished and painted white barn board, deftly create a hybrid farmhouse cottage kitchen. And the contrasting vibrant color of the produce and plants in almost every nook make the roomscape anything but a whitewash.

White, if done right, will warm the heart rather than bring on a chill. The living room above with its rustic light wood walls comes quietly alive amidst the mix of soft neutrals. Using subtle variations of tint as well as a profusion of different textures is the key to making things cozy. Ornaments in ivory, linen and snow white mixed together will create subtle depth and interest. Mix white textiles with abandon: pair beaded and brocade stockings, silky tree skirts, cable knit throws and lacy pillows -- you can go for a bit of gold fringe if you want to indulge. Even white paper China balls that have little affiliation with the holidays fall in line with the color scheme and add to the festive mix.

As colder weather nears, we couldn't decide whether we were more drawn to the idea of the comforts of indoors outside or the hallmarks of outdoors inside, so we married the two scenarios in our Rooms to Love. Equally appealing to the homebody in us all, the fireplaced farmhouse living room and lodge porch above both offer rusticity as well as small touches of welcome luxury.

Hunker down by the fireplace in this farmhouse living room in an overstuffed armchair resplendent with cushy pillows in a stag motif. What sets this room apart is that despite the stark whitewashed hearth and exposed beams, the space crackles with warmth from the woodsy stash of fire logs, the honeyed antique trunk coffee table and the wreathlike antler design mirror. On the other hand, an outdoor lounging area fit for a tsar betrays none of its wintry temperature as long as the candles glow and the wood benches and chairs are covered in faux rabbit fur. These plush accessories take off the chill and make this lodge style porch one to lounge on in all seasons rather than to only pass through.  Softening the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces can create a feeling of integration and fluidity as well as alter your perspective on coziness.

White painted moldings provide a subtle contrast. A comfortable mood deepens with graduated tones from cafe au lait pillows, mink brown cushions, and rustic dark wood pieces such as the driftwood mirror and table. The added beauty of this room is that its low-profile disposition serves as the perfect foundation for changing seasonal decor.  A neutral base can easily be dressed up and down for any occasion, especially at the holidays. Just as natural elements like smooth stones on the hearth and seagrass upon the mantel add a coastal twist to this comfy cottage style, this room could easily be readied for Thanksgiving guests with some gourds and corncobs and substituting an orange or harvest gold area rug. Adding deep red velvet pillows and some berries and evergreen boughs on the mantel would in turn set the scene for festive winter meetings. And when spring returns, adding pussy willows, striped pillows in chambray blue and a white painted table in lieu of the driftwood one can freshen the look.
