                    [post_content] => Seeing loved ones at Thanksgiving has always been as expected as getting cranberry sauce with your turkey. This year, many will forego making their regular journeys or entertaining guests due to travel restrictions, health issues or just a wish to take precautions. You don't need us to let you know that Thanksgiving has never looked quite like this.

Treating yourself to a lovely day seems the only solution if you are to be alone. Teach yourself to make your grandmother's oyster stuffing. Go out in nature and gather pinecones. berries, boughs or seashells for your table. Get out your favorite china and table linens - don't leave them in the hutch just because there won't be a crowd.

Bringing nature into your home and cherishing the things that bring you comfort seem to be the only antidotes to the feeling of loss this holiday (besides a FaceTime session). We here at Cottage Home Furniture wish you a safe, creative and content holiday.

Don't forget to tell us about how you spent your amended day and please follow us on Facebook.

Aside from the creative choices involved, such as picking paint or stain colors, there are some basic practical considerations for everyday functionality.

1. What size farmhouse table do I need?

The ideal dining table size for you depends upon the number of people you seat most days, as well as the size of your room or dining area. This chart shows recommended table sizes based upon number of people for both round tables and rectangular tables with a width of 36”- 42”.
# of people Seats comfortably Workable size
4 4' rect / 48" round  42" round
6 6' rect / 60" round 5' rect / 54" round
8 8' rect / 72" round 7' rect / 66" round
10 10' rect 9' rect
Extensions   Extensions? If you entertain often, company board extensions are available for most of our farmhouse tables. They slide into the ends of the table to maintain the look of the long planks used in traditional farmhouse tables and to avoid a split in the center. A pair of extensions increases the size of your dining table by 3 feet - space for four more guests. Adequate clearance? Allow a clearance of 36”around your table for walking and pulling out chairs (the minimum without feeling too tight is 27”). Make sure that your dining chairs or benches will fit comfortably around your new table, allowing 2-6” between chairs. If you have a banquette, also consider either a trestle or pedestal base for your table to avoid interference with a table leg. For additional information, please see our Dining Table Seating Guide.

2. What kind of wood should I choose for the top of my farmhouse table?

Selecting a type of wood for your farmhouse table involves striking a balance between appearance, durability and cost. Appearance For a farmhouse table with individual character, reclaimed wood such as pine and oak is a popular choice. Other woods, such as maple or new pine, will give your table a classic farmhouse look without rustic details like distressing. Wood with beautiful graining, such as oak, should be shown off with a stained or waxed finish. If you prefer your table painted, choose a wood with fewer knots (like poplar or maple) for no show-through. Durability If you are concerned with keeping the everyday wear of your table to a minimum, consider the hardness of the wood you choose.  Softer woods, such as new pine or poplar, can be more susceptible to dings. Here is a rough guide to the hardness of different woods by density:

New Pine                      Poplar     Old Pine                                Maple                                                              Oak

Soft ---------------------------------------------- Medium ------------------------------------------ Hard

 350  400  450  500  550  600  650  700  750  800  850  900  950 1000 1050 1100 1150 1200 1250 1300

  Cost For farmhouse tables, the harder the wood, the higher the cost. Pine and poplar are the least expensive woods while oak costs considerably more. Reclaimed (old) wood tables, which are more durable than those made from new pine, are also less expensive than hardwood tables. Based upon our 17 years of experience designing custom farmhouse tables, the most popular wood choices remain pine, old (reclaimed) pine and maple.

3. What is the most durable finish for the top of my farmhouse table?

A clear top coat over either a stained or painted finish is the most durable surface for a farmhouse table top. Remember that any major surface damage to this finish may require professional repair – or just leave the marks to increase the character of the table top. Whatever finish you choose for your farmhouse table, we recommend using place mats, coasters and hot pads to keep it free of water rings or burn marks.

4. How do I care for my farmhouse table?

The top of your farmhouse table is easy to maintain – clean with a damp sponge and dry with a clean, soft cloth. DO NOT USE CLEANERS OR SOLVENTS (Pledge, 409, nail polish removers, etc). For small dings or scratches on painted surfaces, touch up paint (not stain) is available from us. A stain from your local hardware store in a similar color to your table finish can fix minor dings or scratches on stained tables, but major repairs or refinishing should be left to a professional. Only apply wax touch-ups (we can provide brand information) if you have a table with a waxed finish and want to freshen the look periodically. Do not sand before applying wax, then let dry and then buff off with clean, dry, soft cloth.

White painted barnboard walls and unfinished wood floors provide a clean backdrop for this light and bright urban cottage style dining room. Recessed nooks in whitewashed brick outfitted with rustic wooden shelves create an informal area for storing dishes, herbs and pottery. Displaying everyday staples such as crusty bread, terra cotta vessels and bottles of wine as part of the overall decor taps into a comfortingly familiar utilitarian beauty. Familiar anchors of classic cottage style such as a reclaimed barnwood table and a painted sideboard pair with cafe chairs in untraditional springtime hues to individualize this cheery dining room. Dropped down on a lengthy chain, a pendant light hovers just above the wood dining table to create an cozy space despite the soaring ceiling. A half wall with pass-through shelves creates a continuity with the neighboring room while still preserving an intimate cottage floor plan.

Displaying everyday staples such as crusty bread, terra cotta vessels and bottles of wine on unfinished shelves taps into a comfortingly familiar utilitarian beauty. #cottagediningroom #pastels #whites #built-ins cottagehomefurniture.com [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => rooms-to-love-urban-cottage-dining-room [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2020-02-06 16:11:51 [post_modified_gmt] => 2020-02-06 21:11:51 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://cottagehomefurniture.com/?p=7906 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [post_icon] => ) [4] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 134146 [post_author] => 3304 [post_date] => 2016-12-16 14:53:31 [post_date_gmt] => 2016-12-16 19:53:31 [post_content] =>

Around the holidays it's easy to be overwhelmed by traditional red, green and white: wherever you look there is a red velvet throw pillow, a shiny green tree skirt or a candy cane striped tablecloth. For mental health as well as variety, it can be good to inject the mid-winter scene with alternative colors. We love our Metal Bistro chairs for this purpose - they are lightweight, versatile and can be brought out at a moment's notice. Paired with twinkling white lights and gold tulle ribbons, these multicolor mavens can make an appearance for one party, or they can be more of a permanent fixture in your cottage decor if you are craving bright color year-round.

The Paint Chip Micro Hooked Wool Rug is a natural choice for tying several colors together. From coppery brown and tangerine to scarlet and carnation pink, this rug takes on almost every color all in an edgy, modern pattern. This rug looks equally at home against a white wooden cottage floor or in a rustic wood and fieldstone lodge living room. All of our pictured Metal Bistro chairs tie in with this rug, but we do offer additional colors, as well as wood seat versions and stools. In powder-coated galvanized steel, the chairs are suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use and are stackable to boot. The Eastport Side Table serves as a companion piece to our chairs, drawing upon both a traditional and industrial look. The simply styles table is available with a stained top as well as in over 25 paint colors.

What alternative colors do you miss most during the holidays?

Today's Rooms to Love features an awe-inspiring, sunny and contemporary cottage dining room. Your attention is immediately drawn to the incredible cobalt blue wallpaper that gives the space an expansive and vibrant feel. The same amazing rich blue is used throughout the space on the upholstered chairs, dishes and vase, continuing the playful and energetic ambiance. To create some "resting" points the table is all stained in a soft honey finish and the neutral sisal rug offers wall to wall texture.

Do you prefer upholstered or slipcovered dining chairs?

This year, many will forego making their regular journeys or entertaining guests due to travel restrictions, health issues or just a wish to take precautions. You don't need us to let you know that Thanksgiving has never looked quite like this. Treating yourself to a lovely day seems the only solution if you are to be alone. Teach yourself to make your grandmother's oyster stuffing. Go out in nature and gather pinecones. berries, boughs or seashells for your table. Get out your favorite china and table linens - don't leave them in the hutch just because there won't be a crowd. Bringing nature into your home and cherishing the things that bring you comfort seem to be the only antidotes to the feeling of loss this holiday (besides a FaceTime session). We here at Cottage Home Furniture wish you a safe, creative and content holiday. Don't forget to tell us about how you spent your amended day and please follow us on Facebook.   Photo credits (clockwise from upper left): Starfish Cottage, Tuvalu Home, Cherry Blossom Events, Shelterness, Jungalow, Sand and Sisal [post_title] => Inspiration Board: An Old Re-Fashioned Thanksgiving [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => inspiration-board-an-old-re-fashioned-thanksgiving [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2020-11-23 12:03:58 [post_modified_gmt] => 2020-11-23 17:03:58 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://cottagehomefurniture.com/?p=186179 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [post_icon] => ) [comment_count] => 0 [current_comment] => -1 [found_posts] => 7 [max_num_pages] => 1 [max_num_comment_pages] => 0 [is_single] => [is_preview] => [is_page] => [is_archive] => 1 [is_date] => [is_year] => [is_month] => [is_day] => [is_time] => [is_author] => [is_category] => [is_tag] => 1 [is_tax] => [is_search] => [is_feed] => [is_comment_feed] => [is_trackback] => [is_home] => [is_privacy_policy] => [is_404] => [is_embed] => [is_paged] => [is_admin] => [is_attachment] => [is_singular] => [is_robots] => [is_favicon] => [is_posts_page] => [is_post_type_archive] => [query_vars_hash:WP_Query:private] => 9d12c4758e8ec7a37adfefa8d0252df2 [query_vars_changed:WP_Query:private] => [thumbnails_cached] => [stopwords:WP_Query:private] => [compat_fields:WP_Query:private] => Array ( [0] => query_vars_hash [1] => query_vars_changed ) [compat_methods:WP_Query:private] => Array ( [0] => init_query_flags [1] => parse_tax_query ) )
