Decorating, redoing (or creating) a cottage fireplace mantel in your living room can be an inexpensive way to get some new-to-you coziness in place fast. As it turns out, you don't even need a fireplace, thanks to the popular "floating mantel".   Decorate Your Mantel Swapping out the seasons, amping up the glitz for some holidays: this is the fun part. Each one of us has our favorite rendition of the perfect fireplace mantel, whether it be a country rustic mantel overflowing with gourds, Indian corn, rusty farm implements and beeswax candles, a coastal-inspired mantel showing off delicate starfish, glass buoys, driftwood and twinkle lights, or a lodge look mantel piled high with pinecones, antique lanterns and elk statuettes. The little touches centered around your theme - coastal, cottage, country farmhouse or lodge - are fun to come by and give the decor our own personal stamp. Remember to keep proportion and color in mind for when you step back to observe your new favorite focal point. But sometimes a mantel need a larger item than knick-knacks to set it off - this is where we can help.   Accessorize Your Mantel  From artwork to mirrors, we have the larger companion pieces your cottage style mantel needs. From the upper left photo going clockwise, we will show you examples of like-minded accessories we offer at Cottage Home Furniture. Sea captain's mustard painted mantel: How we love the old time feel of this dining room and the saffron hue of the mantel. This nautical folk art piece suits this cottage dining room, but if you don't have the original, we have something to fit the bill. Our collection of vintage vinyl floor cloths include some seagoing scenes, and although they are primarily meant for the floor, we don't see any reason why you couldn't frame one (available in 23" x 30" and 43" x 56"). Go with what you love. This one we call Pleasant Point:

Ocean theme mantel with artwork: Pretty and pale, this ensemble proves that not all pictures need to be hung to be taken seriously. The large model sailboat needs balance and finds it in this sea blue painting, propped up nearly on a level. We have a large assortment of custom-made canvas giclee wall decor to hang over your prized mantel, from abstract sea horizons to pastoral landscapes. The giclee that rings true to the one in this sea-inspired living room is called Sea Breeze:

Rustic farmhouse country barnwood beam mantel: Throw another log on the fire and stay a while! This fireplace is too pretty serving as a cordwood container to change a thing. Lanterns, pottery planters and botanical touches encourage the feeling of elegant rusticity, and the large, bold clock face ensnares your interest. We offer a variety of cottage wall clocks to pair with your mantelpiece, including the Hampden 1864 Wall Clock: Inspiration Board: Cottage Fireplace Mantel Makeover   Ocean theme mantel with mirror: Adding depth and an ocean hue of soft blue to this coastal living room, the mirror is key to setting off the mantel with its adorable sea birds and natural sea grasses (and another sailboat). We offer several mirrors - some are built by the craftsmen who make our farmhouse tables and they come in several dozen different paint and stain colors. Our Stony Brook Mirror is available in several beachy colors and echoes the lines of the white painted fireplace with its interesting jutting edges:

DIY Mantels Scoring an antique mantel or weathered barnwood at an estate sale always gets the blood pumping. The same goes for inheriting a country estate with fifteen fireplaces, all with mantels elegantly faded to a Byronesque splendor. But if you have no flea market finds - along with a plain mantel, no mantel or even no fireplace - you can still create "the look" with a little elbow grease - and power tools. Have a mantel that you're kind of on the outs with? Here is a DIY video on how to decoratively augment an existing mantel. Don't have a fireplace? You don't even need one. Here is a DIY video on how to add mount a rustic barnboard beam on a wall that needs a fashionable focal point to create a "floating mantel". Inspired yet? Already our desire to hold on to recent beachy, breezy days and our instinct to start making a cozy nest at home begin their annual tug-of-war. But for the moment, let’s enjoy the serenity of this open, airy beach cottage living room with all the trappings of the summer by the seashore.   The innate coastal feel of this living room comes from lots of natural light bouncing off white walls as well as carefully chosen neutral hues. The barely-there bleached natural fiber rug creates an illusion of increased floor space and allows your beach cottage furniture to stand out. Striped seersucker armchairs and cottage painted furniture, starfish pillows and washed chambray slipcovers – all these choices and more look fantastic against a neutral backdrop.

Yes, we love the neutrals – they are a big part of the Cottage Home philosophy. But we also can’t do without the pops of color that can individualize a room and show your cottage style. Handblown aqua bottles and glassware, a navy throw pillow and a russet striped throw some hints of color into the beachy mix. But the fabulous bright tropical shade of coral on the shutter-style cottage painted coffee table steals the show.   The Distinctive Cottage

I don't know about you, but there has been a lot of reading going on in the last few months at my house. Sometimes I reach for already-read novels, sometimes I exhaust all new titles in the genre of the moment (Victorian ghost stories, anyone?), and sometimes I reading about people and places I've never heard of just to feel like I'm becoming more informed. Looking for something new to read? Featured here are three entertaining books that I have read, two recently and one not, each one paired with a cottage style chair reflecting the book's personality. Because no matter what the content, a good book deserves a great chair.   Comfort is Key If your book is compelling enough, sometimes you will realize that you have been reading until the sunlight has faded, oblivious to the discomfort of old metal lawn furniture. But there's no need for that - especially when we have a large selection of attractive and comfy seating. Our cottage seating ranges from rockers and wooden chairs and stools to upholstered and slipcovered pieces and benches. Whether you read indoors our outdoors, or a little of both, we have suitable seating options upon which you should read your novella or biography.   Inspire Your Setting The first selection above (1) is our Outer Banks Wicker Heirloom Chair, from our Cottage Wicker Collection. Its generous, fanned-out silhouette seems a perfect chair choice for reading a biography about Beryl Markham. I can picture Beryl in the 1920s and 1930s lounging in this rustic wicker chair, taking a break from hard work and sharing a drink on the veranda of her favorite Kenyan bar, the Muthaiga Club. Never heard of her? Besides being the first person (man or woman) to successfully fly an airplane solo east to west across the Atlantic Ocean in 1936, statuesque Beryl was an author and award-winning professional horse trainer. Raised by her father in the Kenyan bush alongside the native people, she had an adventurous life that included hunting and scouting game, even a British Royal Prince. For the rest of her radically unconventional life she was paid hush money by the Crown... and she looked fabulous into her 80s to boot. The central selection (2) is from our Summer House Upholstered Collection - the Pepperrell Cove Upholstered Bench. Customization is a breeze with hundreds of fabrics to choose from. I chose this long and lean piece for the famous couturiere - Coco Chanel. I can see her perch lightly on this sofa-length bench for just un moment - perhaps to sip a pernod - pleased with the simple lines and contrasting pattern. Many of us know Chanel -  her style, her aesthetic. But the secrets she harbored numbered more than her weight and perfume formula. Liaisons of all kinds, from passionate to practical, filled this busy grand dame's life. Not to mention that she came from nothing. She sprung herself from an orphanage straight into Belle Epoque Paris, found some heavy-hitting friends and got to work creating tirelessly. Her new biography reveals arrangements she held with the Nazi occupiers of war-torn France. In sympathy or for survival? We may never know. The last cottage chair selection (3) is from our uniquely styled Rustic Hickory Twig Furniture collection. Backwoods know-how and steambent hickory and oak are what makes it look so cool. I can picture settling down in this rocking chair to listen to the sounds from a steamy bayou and hear a good old murder tale. OK - so I read this book a long time ago now. Or did I just see the movie? No - I would never do such a thing. So besides knowing that this book contains a murder, and some antiques, as well as voodoo and a creepy statue on the cover, I don't remember the details. But I remember the setting, the old, genteel squares of Savannah as well as the eerie kudzu-covered side of Savannah. And of course certain characters like Lady Chablis and the voodoo priestess Minerva definitely made an impression. This country style rocker is the best place to comfortably hear a story filled with fear, revenge and ghosts - the gentle rocking of your own flesh and blood will stave off the spirits!   Choose Your Colors Shown in Acorn, the Outer Banks Wicker Heirloom Chair is available in 20 available colors (including Natural). However, there are eighteen total leg colors as well, and any Benjamin Moore paint color can be added to your bench to further make it your own. Roses are Red & Cottage Homes can be too.

Adding touches of red to a cottage living room can be an inspired decorating move, but can also daunt those who think that the color necessarily invokes boldness. Soft reds are a compromise for those wanting to inject some warmth but who are also afraid of creating an overpowering palette. Valentine's Day is a perfect time to experiment with red with the possibility of it becoming a staple in your decor year-round.

Red accessories can ramp up your color scheme as much or as little as you desire without any permanent commitment. In the cottage room above, pillows and a lampshade in persimmon both draw out the natural color in the brick hearth and floor and add interest to the neutral taupe couch. Even the spines of old brick red volumes stand out nicely against the black backdrop of a floor-to-ceiling built-in and can be changed out to another color or object without much energy. Adding red is a great way to easily change up your decor and express your current mood.

Do you prefer bright lipstick red or soft berry reds?

City dwellers lucky enough to come by a spacious apartment with exposed brick and floor-to-ceiling windows definitely have a head start on creating an urban oasis. But anyone can add elements of this effortlessly elegant pied-a-terre feel to their decor by studying the relaxed rustic space above. Borrow ideas like mixing traditional furniture with a primitive patterned rug as well as using a versatile slipcovered sofa as a time-tested gathering spot. Vital to this inviting living room is a cottage-style slipcovered sofa. Offering a touch of refined style paired with a casual air, our Camden Slipcovered Sofa is perfect for dressing up with overstuffed pillows as you see fit. Available in a townhouse and regular size, this sofa is just one option from our Shoreline Slipcovered Furniture Collection. A classic wooden dresser is not just for the bedroom - it can serve as a timeless piece upon which to display an antique Asian vase. Our Wainscott 4 Drawer Dresser can be stained or painted in a few dozen hues, with several knob style options. Please peruse our Hamptons Furniture Collection for other coordinating pieces. Sometimes finding one unique piece can give a room a whole new direction. We think the Honorine Demilune Console Table emanates a stately presence and a French flair - just the thing for capturing cottage chic. Several color options are available. And for bringing everything together we suggest a lush wool-blend rug in neutral colors and a primitive pattern - the Numa Charcoal Hand Knotted Rug. A minimalist alternative to a traditional Oriental floor covering, the Numa is an apt option to complement the glowing wood floors of this renovated mill building space.

Are you a pure traditionalist or willing to mix it up?

Back up this fresh new look with a variety of transitional textures evoking both warm and cold weather months to help bridge the seasons. The cottage study above, with its granite fireplace framed by barnboards, white painted wood floors, and natural honey tones, is a perfect neutral nook. Small steps of slightly changing hues take you seamlessly from snow white to stone and sand through to warming golden brown. The deep color of the rattan chair frame plays off the reclaimed barn wood desk while the natural jute rug echoes the sandy granite blocks. Despite warming yourself by the hearth, you'll have no problem envisioning the tropical locale familiar to the star of the show - a large pink flamingo on a textile over the fireplace.

1. Footbridge Upholstered Ottoman | 2. Brushed Nickel Three Pendant Chandelier | 3. Medina Green Jacquard Woven Wool Rug | 4. Grenada Console Table |  5. Rooster Rock Leather Sofa | 6. Myrtle Leather Ottoman

Injecting a beach cottage feel in your home can be as easy as pairing a neutral duo, such as silvery grey and sandy natural, with seaborne hues like blues and greens. A mix of weathered grey and sand with aqua and deep sea blue brings to mind bleached driftwood set against a shimmering blue sky and ocean expanse. Offering a modern twist on a tribal pattern, the Medina Green Jacquard Woven Wool Rug effortlessly ties together this beach-driven palette. Mixing leather and upholstery, wood and metal, we have selected some pieces to play off all the great colors in this rug: dove grey, soft tan, turquoise, citrus green and deep teal.

If leather is to your liking, our Summerhouse Leather Furniture Collection offers many cottage style sofas, chairs, ottomans and more in an array of bold colors, and many of the pieces are also available upholstered. The Rooster Rock Leather Sofa, also available in an armchair, looks smart with the Myrtle Leather Ottoman. The Footbridge Upholstered Ottoman is a longer option, and can also be used as an impromptu bench or coffee table. Painted furniture always looks at home in a beach cottage living room, and the Grenada Console Table picks up the summery shade of green in this rug. Shown here for added inspiration, the Brushed Nickel Three Pendant Chandelier can add some character to really any room in your beach cottage.

White, if done right, will warm the heart rather than bring on a chill. The living room above with its rustic light wood walls comes quietly alive amidst the mix of soft neutrals. Using subtle variations of tint as well as a profusion of different textures is the key to making things cozy. Ornaments in ivory, linen and snow white mixed together will create subtle depth and interest. Mix white textiles with abandon: pair beaded and brocade stockings, silky tree skirts, cable knit throws and lacy pillows -- you can go for a bit of gold fringe if you want to indulge. Even white paper China balls that have little affiliation with the holidays fall in line with the color scheme and add to the festive mix.

White painted moldings provide a subtle contrast. A comfortable mood deepens with graduated tones from cafe au lait pillows, mink brown cushions, and rustic dark wood pieces such as the driftwood mirror and table. The added beauty of this room is that its low-profile disposition serves as the perfect foundation for changing seasonal decor.  A neutral base can easily be dressed up and down for any occasion, especially at the holidays. Just as natural elements like smooth stones on the hearth and seagrass upon the mantel add a coastal twist to this comfy cottage style, this room could easily be readied for Thanksgiving guests with some gourds and corncobs and substituting an orange or harvest gold area rug. Adding deep red velvet pillows and some berries and evergreen boughs on the mantel would in turn set the scene for festive winter meetings. And when spring returns, adding pussy willows, striped pillows in chambray blue and a white painted table in lieu of the driftwood one can freshen the look.

Suddenly you emerge from the trees to see the glow of a fire in the window of a farmhouse and hear friendly shouted greetings. Welcome to the unfussy farmhouse above, where you are ushered into a century-old living room boasting richly stained original built-ins and a quaint whitewashed brick fireplace. You're given the seat of honor next to the fire, in an antique armchair with plush persimmon upholstery, and handed a drink and an old book to peruse while the owners whip up a hearty supper in the next room. One can dream... This soothing refuge boasts the midnight blue of a mid-autumn evening on the walls, punctuated by plucky orange-red and cinnamon woodwork and floors. A few bright spots of white, namely the slipcovered sofa and painted brickwork, serve to balance the deeply restful mood created by dark blue. Details like the beadboard-backed bookcase and granite hearth reinforce a unique nostalgia, and timelessness supersedes the fad of the moment to make a comfortably classic sitting area. Individuality shines through as the butterfly theme of the print on the mantel is echoed in the throw pillows, and according to preference, this room could change up quite easily with the introduction of a new slipcover or plaid or floral accessories.
